Duathalon

Bula, welcome back to my blog, on the 22nd of February we held a school duathalon. This was an optional event so if you wanted to be by yourself it was competitive, although if you chose to be in a team it was just for fun (not competitive) If you took place in the dualthon by yourself and you were chosen  you go onto represent our school in the zones duathalon. I competed as a team with one of my good friends Maia, she ran 2 and 1/2 laps of Walter park witch about 2.km. I biked 5 laps witch is about 5.km. Maia did a very good run, after she finished she look really hot, she tapped my hand and I ran to get my bike. After I done about 2 laps my legs were a bit sore and I desperately needed water. Unfortunately I didn't have a water stand on my bike so I had to get my friend to chuck me some as I rode past. In the girls we came about 2nd but over all around 6 or 7. Maia and I were very happy on how we did in the duathalon. Next year for my last year at St Francis I want to do the duathalon by myself, but as I have realised I need to do a lot of training!

Swimming lessons

Bonjour,welcome back to my blog. Last week and continuing this week we have been hoping on the bus and heading to QEII for swimming lessons/water safety. The first week and a half the coachs each us how we can improve in our swimming. They also teach us how we can stay safe swimming in rivers or beaches over the summer. On the last couple of days we do a pajama day to teach us that if we were on a boat in our pyjamas and some how we got into the water after the boat sinking or something like that, we could be safe. Then we do life jackets and things to help out if we were stranded in the middle of lots of water, like what we need to have on a boat to signal for help or how to keep warm. Also on one of the days we do some boat things. We get to go under the boat and fall of the edge of the boat. See you guys next time bye.

Swimming sports

Last Friday the 15 of February, year 5 to 8 competed in our school swimming sports. Unfortunately this year I could not compete as I had a perpetrated eardrum. Each student swam as well as they could. Each student that place 1st 2nd or 3rd go through to the Zones event which has lots of different school. From what I saw every did a great job and I hope every one was happy with how they went

Kaupeka learning week 3

This week in Kaupeka We made a place mat. A place mat is something that has 4 sections, in those 4 sections you have to choose 4 people and describe why/how you think that have showed greatness/why they are great. In the middle there is a circle, in that circle you write 5 key attributes that you think those four people share.  Here is my place mat!

Brilliant Bath Fizzies

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because we had a good picture of what we were making as in the first one we were just going with whatever we could.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was learning how to work as a team, I also enjoyed getting the time to make and get all the ingredients necessary. Next time I would make more of smaller portions. I wouldn’t change the way we worked as a team, as I thought that we worked decently well.

Brilliant bath bombs and luscious lip scrubs

Kia Ora and welcome back.
This term we have been using a STEAM approach to make a marketable product,
for our market day in week 8.Tuesday the 4th of December. My team has made a
good decision on making bath bombs and lip scrubs. We started to figure out what
we can make and how could make it, what ingredients we would need , and who was
buying each one. After we made those decisions we went of over the weekend  
and on Monday we came back with all the ingredients we needed. On Tuesday we
started making some lip scrub. On the Wednesday we started to try out the bath
bombs. Both of or products were successful and we are really excited for our market
day.

PBL performance

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas.Culture is where we are from and traditions like special holidays or special food we eat with our families and friends.
Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.
In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read how Maui Slowed the Sun, Hatupatu and the Bird Women, Paika and the Whale and Maui and the Giant fish.  I have retold the legend of Maui and the Giant Fish in my own words.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

Reflection:
For our production I contributed by painting the background and helping set up a lot of the artwork and making a sign for the beautiful Pihanga!

I think the show might teach others about something they don’t know, and our parents will be proud of us and all our hard work.

What I found interesting about working with others? Well I had a lot of fun producing the artwork with my friends. But a couple of times there were some decisions we had to make that we sometimes didn’t all agree on so we had to figure out a way to compromise.
